Direction: Bedtime Stories (2017)
by Charles Mee and the Members of Las Palmas Senior Citizen Center
Las Palmas Senior Center, Los Angeles
Literally I called a senior citizen center and asked to put on a play with their old people and they said yes. I think we made $30 and we donated it back to the center. We performed with a bed, a piano, and several bedside table lamps. People came to see it!
It was important to me that anybody that wanted to participate could – so we "auditioned" the seniors before we "picked" a play. I figured something like Shakespeare or Charles Mee was in the works, since its maellable and free – and I was right. Bedtime Stories really sat well on them.
An odd thing was that we never talked about costumes – they asked me ya know, a few days before, what should we wear? Privately, I wanted all of them to be in fancy party attire. It made sense in an odd way, even though the show is about couples post-coitus having random conversations about dreams and politics and gossip. Maybe it was just the feeling of celebration about the whole thing. And the void around the conversations, the sort of impending silence – something that we should be well dressed for. Plus it's a cheeky fucking play, I highly reccommend you give it a read or produce it or whatever. But so, I never told them. I said, wear what you think you should wear.
They all showed up in party dress.
